Preparing your child for divorce

Divorce is a stressful event for families. You and your spouse have come to a point where staying together no longer makes sense. Emotions run high as you go through the process of separating your lives. This emotion affects your children as well.

Children become caught up in the conflict of divorce. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has a few suggestions for easing the strain on your child your divorce may cause:

  • Keep a united front – When you first tell your child about the divorce, both you and your spouse should be there. After the divorce, you should both stay involved in your child’s life. This eases the stress your child faces as his or her life changes. It also prevents forcing your child to choose one parent over the other.
  • Make sure your child understands why you are divorcing – Divorce often confuses children. They may feel threatened by the changes. They might think they are responsible. Explaining the divorce as soon as possible can help your child to accept it. Make sure your child knows that divorce is about feelings between parents. The two of you are responsible, not your child.
  • Be honest – Your child should understand what will come as the divorce finalizes. Adjusting to this change will take time. Help your child understand and prepare for the stresses that will come.
  • Avoid negativity – While it is important to be honest, do not speak negatively of your spouse to your child. Doing so causes your child to feel like he or she must pick sides.

Divorce has a long-lasting effect on children’s lives. While divorce often makes sense for the parents, children may have trouble seeing why it must happen. Preparing them for the event will ease the stress they can face.
