Child custody: Report shows progress in co-parenting arrangements

It goes without saying that children benefit greatly when both parents are involved in their lives. Because of this, co-parenting has recently become the preferred type of child custody arrangement for most California parents who separate. In a co-parenting or shared parenting arrangement, both parents assume equal responsibility of raising the children. In a recent report released by the National Parents Organization, some states are still not encouraging co-parenting arrangements despite numerous studies showing the benefits.

According to the report, research has shown that children benefit the most by spending equal amounts of time with each parent. Recent studies indicate that single-parent families represent about 71% of high school dropouts and 63% of teen suicides. The NPO says state laws that favor shared parenting help promote the well-being of children.

Since 2014, the NPO has been grading states on a scale of A to F based on child custody laws that favor shared parenting.  Reportedly, the number of shared parenting states has increased from 26 in 2014 to 34 in 2019. Also, the NPO says 13 shared parenting bills have been signed into law in nine different states in the last five years. However, 17 states received a grade of D or F, according to the latest report.

Studies have shown that co-parenting has numerous benefits for children, so this arrangement is quickly becoming common across the country. However, child custody laws will always vary from state to state. Parents in California who have questions about the laws surrounding child custody could obtain much-needed guidance by consulting a knowledgeable family law attorney experienced in family law.
