Gray divorce presents unique challenges

Ending a marriage is one of life's most difficult events. Divorce is stressful and can be traumatic at any age but, surprisingly, the divorce rate as a whole is on a decline these days. However, in one certain demographic, the rate of divorce is rapidly rising. In what has become known as gray divorce, more and more senior adults in California nd across the country are deciding to end their marriage. According to recent statistics, divorce rates among adults ages 50 and older in the United States have nearly doubled in the last 20 years.

Gray divorce presents special challenges to senior adults who find themselves suddenly thrust into instability. Many are questioning what may be causing this trend. One big factor is that people are living longer these days, and the societal stigma that once surrounded divorce is now disappearing. Many senior adults have finished raising kids and are now refusing to stay unhappily married.

There are definitely some consequences that come with late-life divorce. Some retirees may be forced to re-enter the workforce to make ends meet. Late-life divorce also impacts adult children and grandchildren of gray-divorcees. The grandchildren may struggle to understand why they no longer see their grandparents together.

Although divorce at any age definitely has its challenges, it should not be looked upon as a negative. This can be a time of rediscovery for older adults. For those in California who have questions regarding divorce, an important piece of advice is to consult a legal representative. An attorney experienced in family law can answer questions and provide guidance during this difficult and trying time.
